- Elizabeth Horrocks Jackson and her husband Aaron
Jackson were members of the Martin Handcart company.
- Aaron was 31 and Elizabeth was 29. Their three children
were 7, 4, and 2.
- Aaron got sick with “Mountain Fever” after leaving Laramie.
He fell in the middle of the Platte River and was helped to
the side by others. On October 25th he died in his sleep next
to his wife.
- A few days later on October 27th, Elizabeth had a dream
in which Aaron stood by her and said, “Cheer up, Elizabeth,
deliverance is at hand.” The next day the express rescuers
found the company.
- Elizabeth and her children went to Ogden to live with her
brother once they reached the Valley.
- She married William Kingsford in 1857 and when the Logan
temple was finished she was sealed to her first husband,
Aaron, with William acting as proxy.
- Elizabeth said of her handcart suffering: “I hope, too, that
it will inspire my posterity with fortitude to stand firm and
faithful to the truth, and be willing to suffer, and sacrifice all
things they may be required to pass through for the Kingdom
of God’s sake.”
